Elon Musk’s Tesla has restarted its search for showroom space in New Delhi, according to two sources familiar with the matter. This move marks the first indication that Tesla is reconsidering its entry into the Indian market after previously halting investment plans earlier this year.
In April, Musk planned to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to potentially announce a $2-3 billion investment in India. However, the trip was abruptly canceled as Tesla announced layoffs affecting 10% of its global workforce due to declining sales.
Tesla, having paused its search for showroom space in recent months, is now in initial discussions with India’s leading property developer, DLF. Sources indicate that the company is exploring showroom spaces ranging between 3,000 to 5,000 square feet (280-465 square meters) for customer experience centers and significantly larger spaces for delivery and service operations.
Locations under consideration include DLF’s Avenue Mall in South Delhi and the Cyber Hub complex in Gurugram. Other major international retailers like Uniqlo, Mango, and Marks & Spencer also have a presence in these prime locations.
Although discussions are in progress, no official deal has been confirmed, and Tesla is reportedly in talks with other potential partners.
Tesla and DLF have yet to respond to media inquiries regarding these developments.
